Baby Update

Yesterday we had our ultrasound...at that time everything looked good, and the tech was 90% sure we are having a baby GIRL!!!

However, today there has been a tough development. I was having a bit of spotting yesterday, and today I could tell that there was something "off". I thought I might be leaking amniotic fluid. So I made an appointment to see my doctor at 4.

We got to the doctor's office, and she did a quick check, and took a sample of the fluid. It turned out to be amniotic fluid, and she said that it looked like I was dilated to a four. Because I am only 20 weeks, and a fetus isn't viable outside the womb until at least 24 weeks, it doesn't look good. She said that we had 2 options.

Option one was to go ahead and induce me. Of course I said NO WAY to that one...

Option two was to admit me to the hospital w/ IV antibiotics for at least 48 hours, then send me home on oral antibiotics for about another week and see what happens. So of course we picked option two.

It turns out that I have an incompetent cervix. This means that as the baby gets bigger and puts more pressure on my cervix, it thins out and dilates early.

Right now they can't do a cerclage (basically where they put a stitch or 2 in my cervix to hold it closed) because with the leak of amniotic fluid, the risk of infection is too great.

The doctors are being pretty blunt, and you can tell that they don't think that I'll carry this baby much longer. They did say that IF the leak seals its self (and that's a big if because I am already dilated) then they will go a head and talk about a cerclage.

So I can get up to go to the bathroom, and I can shower every 2 or 3 days, but otherwise I am in bed.

24 weeks is when a fetus can live outside the womb. IF I can make it to 24 weeks, then I'm back in the hospital until I have the baby...trying to keep her in as long as possible.

I have had a blessing and right now, I feel at peace. Everything is in the Lord's hands. We will be ok...no matter what happens. I'm not saying that if our little girl doesn't wait & comes too early that it won't be hard...but we will be ok.

Right now we could use extra prayers that Heavenly Father's will be done, and that Matt and I will have the faith to trust in the Lord, and to trust in each other.
